Is social support an alternative to medical care?

David Spiegel, MD. I don’t think of it as alternative medicine. I think of it as integrative medicine. It’s meant to complement and integrate with standard medical care. And I do not recommend people not doing their standard medical care. I recommend they’re adding to it things that help them live better and live more comfortably with the illness.
